Devil’s in the Details

Good architecture depends on the big ideas, but it is often the small decisions that determine whether a building really works.

Careful detailing has an obvious aesthetic role. Junctions, edges, reveals, materials and finishes all contribute to the character of a building, and small inconsistencies can undermine an otherwise strong design.

But detailing is equally important to environmental performance. In low-energy buildings, the way walls meet roofs, windows, floors and other elements can have a major effect on heat loss, airtightness, moisture movement and long-term durability.

Poorly resolved details can create thermal bridges, draughts and condensation risks. Well considered details help the building fabric perform as intended, while also making the finished building feel coherent and well made.

For us, good detailing is where design and performance come together. It is not something added at the end of a project, but an essential part of creating buildings that are attractive, comfortable, efficient and built to last.
