What is Plan B
A good design rarely arrives fully formed at the first attempt.
For many projects, we find it useful to explore more than one overall design approach at an early stage. A second proposal — a “Plan B” — can help test assumptions, challenge first instincts and reveal opportunities that might otherwise be missed.
The value is not simply in producing two different schemes. It is in the discussion that follows. By comparing alternative ideas with the client, we can better understand priorities, preferences and compromises, and gradually refine the design in response.
This iterative process often leads to a stronger final solution. Elements from different options may be combined, developed or discarded as the project evolves. The design becomes the product of an informed conversation rather than a single fixed proposal presented for approval.
In this way, alternative designs are not wasted work. They are part of the process of discovering what the project really needs.
